Little Black Bear

This little black bear came through our yard over the summer. My mom had just left to head back home, the kids were gone, and I was in my office doing homework or creating more earrings for another market.

We still had the kiddie pool out for the kids and the dogs. Well, just Freyja. Athena doesn’t have any interest in water. It’s close to the house, and middle of the day, I wasn’t expecting any other visitors. But here came this bear, needing a drink.

Once Athena realized I was watching something outside she started barking and scared him off. Really, we don’t need bears in the yard, so it’s good he left scared of the barking. I’d only had a minute to grab a couple of photos before she saw me, so I didn’t have anything better than this.

I used a variety of ridiculous edits in order to see the different patterns in the fur. Images that would never be desired for sharing. Together they helped me to piece together a better lighting. This was really an experimental piece. Between the crazy image edits and blurriness, to the bristol board that I haven’t used in ages and didn’t like when I first got it, to the Prismacolor and odorless mineral spirits, another product that I haven’t used in a long time.

Overall, I enjoyed the process and have started another drawing with the same style and materials. It came out really well, and went much faster than most of my sanded paper drawings.

I’ll mount this on one of my wooden panels and varnish. I love the way that I now finish them off. It really upgrades the presentation.
